The Colette Sewing Handbook Review: A Beautiful Fabric

The Colette Sewing Handbook / (c) Sarai Mitnick

"Fabric is the most important raw material in sewing, and the characteristics of the fabric you choose with have a dramatic effect on your project."
- Sarai Mitnick

Oh, fabric! How I love thee! Choosing the fabric has to be one of my most favourite parts of the sewing project. In The Colette Sewing Handbook, Sarai has devoted an entire chapter to it - decadence!

Sarai presented a snapshot study of fabric in a series published on The Coletterie, Colette Patterns' blog. In the book, Sarai goes into much greater detail, discussing the behaviour and makeup of a variety of fabrics, to name a few.

I always look forward to Sarai sharing her creations. Not only are they beautifully crafted, they are made from decadent fabrics. Some of my favourites are her yellow silk blouse created for the Spring Palette Challenge and her most recent creation for the Fall Palette Challenge, a pumpkin silk blouse from the Jasmine pattern.

Sarai's simple approach to choosing fabric will keep you focused and aid you in sewing a beautiful and comprehensive wardrobe. She likens fabric knowledge to learning another language and becoming fluent in the language of fabric will increase your skills and confidence as a sewist. Personally, reading this chapter and the in-depth look as the fabrics within has given me confidence to try ones I would normally have discounted as too hard or fussy.

The project for this chapter is the Truffle Dress; a crisp sleeveless dress with beautiful flowing details. Armed with your knowledge of fabric, Sarai guides you through choosing the correct one for both the dress and your preferences. I can hardly wait until Sarai blogs about this dress so you can see just how beautiful it is! Simple design with high-impact details are just one of the many hallmarks of Colette Patterns.

Stay tuned for my review of the next chapter in this book: A Fine Finish. Please see my other chapter reviews on The Colette Sewing Handbook:

I have to say I've been LOVING your review of The Colette Sewing Handbook! I have a collection of tailoring books from the 50's and 60's that although 'dated' are an amazing resource and a couple of drafting/draping text books from college. Mine are a bit too technical and dry, from your review it appears that this book as every bit of the best info from the dusty old books I refer to. I am resolved to get this one and either replace some of my dustier tomes or add it to my reference library :)

I especially love this chapter about fabric. Really and truly fabric is the most important part of a garment. Cheap fabric looks cheap, the wrong fabric can ruin a good pattern, but the right fabric for the right job looks exquisite.
