Introducing: Sew Colette

I am really excited to be introducing this sew-along! Like you, I was thrilled when Sarai told us that her marvellous book, the Colette Sewing Handbook, was being published. I was especially thrilled to have had the opportunity to review here it prior to its publication. Within minutes of opening it, I knew it was something special and unique. Every page was a feast for the senses and the patterns included in the book are just what we've come to expect from Colette Patterns: timeless, feminine, and a dream to sew!

One of my projects this year is to sew all of these lovely patterns and it could not be more serendipitous that Erin of Miss Crayola Creepy has the same plans! After a flurry of emails, we decided to throw our hats in the ring and go for it! Thus, Sew Colette was hatched.

The plan is to sew one garment per month in the order they appear in the book. Along the way, we'll be delving into the sewing techniques taught by Sarai and, yes, that includes making our own croquis. Participants can sew all of the garments or only a few - the choice is entirely yours!

The sew-along kicks off today - Monday, January 9th - and our first project is the Meringue Skirt. Our sew-along schedule for this month is as follows:

January 12 - Taking measurements and sewing the muslin.
January 19 - Fitting the muslin.
January 26 - Sewing the final garment.
January 31 - Meringue Parade - show off your finished garments.

C'mon and sew along with us! Grab a button for your blog or website and don't forget to join the Flickr group! Remember to post your creations in the Colette Patterns Flickr group, too!

Thank you so much to Sarai for enthusiastically embracing the sew-along and graciously allowing us to use your photos!

yes! A little help with a sew along, what fun, and all with my new lovely book too. Well done.

I'll not be sewing along in this one but I will definitely be watching from the sidelines. Aside from having entirely too many other sewing projects I want to do, I was rather under impressed with the pattern's in the Colette Sewing Handbook. There wasn't really anything that fit my life, which is sad because I was so looking forward to the book. Maybe all of your projects will be able to change my mind. :)

Fab idea, I really love that you can dip in on the projects you want to complete and out on the ones that aren't for you! I hope I can keep up with this sew-along!

Oh, yes ma'am! I was just wishing there was a community of us all sewing through the Handbook together!

I've already done my muslin for the Meringue (a straight size 8 fit with no alterations needed-- I'm surprised and delighted!), but that's okay-- I'll need the extra time to figure out what fabric to use!

Debi said...

Great idea! Not sure about my schedule yet but I may participate in one or all of them.. :)

I'm in! For some of them at least :) I do have a goal of sewing 12 dresses this year, and a few of them are coming from this book!

Thanks for hosting the sewalong.

I'm in! I'm a little ahead in the Meringue skirt as I've just finished the muslin, but looking forward to doing the rest along with you guys!

So excited I found your blog. I'm also a homemaker and I've really been wanting to learn how to sew. Looking forward to following you along on all your sewing adventures!

Thanks for starting this! It sounds like fun - I can't wait to get started!

Sounds great! Will be my first sewalong, and the beginning of my new blog, how exciting!

What a wonderful idea! I got the handbook for Christmas and am really enjoying reading it. I'm in for following the sew-a-long, and making some of the projects, though I'm not sure I'll do them in the same order as the rest of you or quite as shown in the book. The Meringue, for example, would fit my life best as a summer garment, so I don't plan on sewing it just yet. Plus I think I want to make the Taffy as a nightgown, and as for the Pastille, well on my figure it would work better as a skirt. So we'll see how this goes... but in January & February I do hope to finish my long-standing WIP, the Colette Peony, and start the Taffy nightgown.

OMG this is perfect timing! I'm so excited to follow along! Just out of curiosity - how often will you be posting? Once a week, according to the schedule? I like to have an idea of when I can post my questions.. :)

Thanks again for putting this on! I'm really looking forward to the next few months!

Take care, Amanda

I have been toying with the idea of getting this book for awhile, and think I'm pushed over the edge. Something about making these with 'someone' seems less intimidating. My goal this year is to sew clothes for myself and I think this is the perfect way to do it!

Sandra Schwab said...

What a great idea! I bought the book as soon as it came out, and I'm completely in love with it. I plan to start with the projects in summer (or probably in late summer) when I'll have reached my goal weight of my Weight Watchers plan (well, at least I hope I'll have reached it by then ...). So I guess that means I'm going to participate in the sew-along a few months after the fact - I'm sure it will provide plenty of inspiration for me and I'm looking forward to cheering everybody else on. :)

Knittymama said...

What a wonderful idea! I'm actually doing something similar this year I'm calling Monthly Apparel, challenging myself to sew at least one item of clothing a month, and the Collette book was on my list of garments to sew. So I'd love to join up with you as well! (I know I'll need the help!:-)

Urban Rustic said...

You certainly like to keep everyone busy!
I haven't got this book so unless I get a copy soon I might not be joining in with you all.

Tors said...

Oooh, I shall be following this with interest. Good luck with all the projects, I can't wait to see your finished garments!

Anna said...

Yes! Just the thing I needed when I was starting to question if the patterns in the book where really my style. Now I'm going to put my twist to the patterns. :)
I'm in!

quietandsmalladventures said...

oooo can't wait to the finished garments!! i can't participate at this time, but i'm excited to see the inspirations and the extra pointers that come of this :)

Tina said...

Oooo! I got this book for Christmas (my beau so gets me!) and I'd love to join in... I'll think about it. I'm a bit strapped for cash.

Irene Bullock said...

Perfect timing! I have the book, the stash to bust and no clear plans for sewing besides finishing a dress - so I'm in! I'll skip the Licorice dress, but I'm fully committed to make the other 4 patterns - yay!

Len said...

Ooh yay! I literally just posted about my intentions to get sewing the Meringue skirt, so I'll be joining in with this for sure! I've been working on my own croquis... turns out I'm not very good at drawing, ha!

jessieaucoin said...

i was already planning on sewing a garment a month for myself this year, many of which were from the book, so condsider me in. I may be a bit behind you in the beginning as I won't have a single second to sew until the later half of Jan...

I am a sucker for a good sew along. I plan to join as soon as I can get a copy of the book. Hopefully that will be before you start.

Mari Cruz said...

Great! I bought the book in november, it's a good excuse to start working with it. I'm not sure if i will complete all models, but try is easy.

Sarah said...

This is perfect timing! One of my goals this year was to sew all the patterns in the Colette Handbook too! I'm definitely joining in!! :)

Alessa said...

Oh, how fun! I've also got the book and it's such a lovely read! I've been thinking about making every garment, but I have no idea if I will have the time to follow your schedule... Ah well, we'll see!

zoe said...

Oh brilliant. This was also one of my goals this year - to sew up all of the projects in the Colette book so I am going to throw my hat into the ring and join in. Can't promise to always keep up but I will be following along and catching up when i can!

Tracey said...

okay!! So excited I am in!

I'd like to join the fun as well! I just got the book for Christmas and I can't wait! Thanks for hosting!

ahhh!!! i want in! :: scrambles to get supplies::

I'm so excited at the prospect of a sewalong for the whole book! It's extra useful as I want to make the Truffle dress for my friends' wedding! It's always less scary in a group!

I really want to put the sewalong badge onto my blog, but cannot for the life of me work out how to do it... I presume since you added html below each badge image, you need to add it in to your blog's html, but as I've literally just started my blog, and have one solitary little post up, I'm too much of a newbie to work out how to do it! Argh!

Oh well! I need to get fabric shopping this weekend in time to join in with the sewing!!

Alexandra said...

Whee! Thank you so much for the blog/html help Sarah! Now I feel like I'm really on board!

ellie said...

Count me in! I'm a little late on the action, but I traced my pattern out last night and I'm planning to make a start on my muslin today. Wish me luck!

Christie said...

count me in too!

Will be my first sew-along, hope I can keep up!

Ali said...

Wowza, lady, I cannot keep up with you. I got the book and I love it. I'll be sewing along, but you know, in Ali-fashion, that's a sort of haphazard concept. But those neutral Meringues are calling my name, so lovely! x And I can't wait to see what everyone whips up!

Jess said...

I just bought the book, so hopefully I can join you for a few of these!

zilredloh said...

I don't think I'll have time to participate, but I sure will be following along with you all oogling at your creations.

This is a wonderful idea! :)
