|Marie, Winnie, and Catherine clearly in cahoots with each other! (Photo nicked from Winnie's blog)|
It's all Winnie's fault. I mean look at that expression on her face! She's egging me on, I tell you. Catherine and Marie are accessories to this debacle, so don't let their innocent faces fool you! There eyes were boring holes into me and they MADE ME go and buy fabric!
It all started when I was innocently drinking my tea (Darjeeling, in case you were interested) and catching up on my blog reader, when I came across Winnie's fantastic Birmingham Rag Market haul. Made demented by her fantastic fibre acquisitions, I grabbed up my shopping bags and high-tailed it to Ottawa Street; the place to buy fabric in my town. Want to see what I bought?
First up is a rather utilitarian purchase of 5 metres of white broadcloth, which is great for lining my summer dresses and at $2 / metre is was a steal! The second fabric is the most expensive I bought at $7 / metre. It's an embroidered cotton voile and I thought that the 1.5 metres I bought would make a lovely lacey Sorbetto, sans pleat.
Next up is some yummy turquoise twill (2 metres) earmarked for another wrap skirt. The gorgeous rose print (3 metres) is by Sandi Henderson from her Meadowsweet 2 collection. It's utterly fantastic and will be used to sew the very first project from Erin's, Rochelle's, and my New Top Secret Sew-Along, which we are unveiling in June.
The sheer fun factor purchase is this amazing stripey knit. It's 60" wide and I picked up 1.5 metres. I'm hoping to get a short-sleeve Renfrew for me and a knit dress for Miss Friday out of this. I have already made 4 Renfews, plus a dress version, and I think it is the greatest knit shirt pattern EVER.
These last purchases were directly influenced by Ali's red mini wardrobe. I love red and realized that it needs to take a more prominent place in my wardrobe. Enter the following:
1. 2 metres of red linen for a pair of drawstring capris
2. 1.4 metres of cherry print cotton for another Sorbetto
3. 1.6 metres of rose print cotton for a sleeveless Jasmine
4. 3 metres of red/pink rose print rayon challis for a dress, likely an Oolong.
The rayon challis was a great bargain, as they were selling it at buy one metre get two free! As I have the blue colourway, I simply could not resist the red/pink one.
Total yardage purchased = 21 metres. (I know, I mix up my metres/yards. This is what happen when you grow up when Canada went from Imperial to Metric. Ugh.) I have managed to sew though more than 1/3 of my stash this year with plans to continue demolishing it. As I have been so diligent, I don't feel too badly about my completely indulgent haul. Besides, I was in the throes of fibre fever, which is all Winnie's fault.
