ModCloth is that temptation. I own the Soda Fountain Dress in Grape and it is glorious! The fit is spot on (I ordered a medium and I'm a 36" B, 28"W, and 38" H) and the colour is a beautifully rich and deep royal purple. I love the vintage details, such as the covered buttons and the cute matching bow belt. The skirt is lovely and swishy; great for twirling!
Recently I purchased this petticoat. It was as lovely as it looked on screen and the only downside is that it is too fluffy to wear for everyday. If you're looking for a fabulously fluffy petticoat, then this ones' for you! I, however, need something with a little less 'oomph' for everyday wear and will make my own using Gertie's tutorial. I'm quite disappointed that the petticoat is going back, but after speaking with Tracey at ModCloth's super helpful customer service line, I decided to go for a store credit. It's not like a beautiful ModCloth dress won't tempt me again!
My dilemma? I have approximately $50 US to spend and I am mad for two dresses! Sadly, having both is not an option at this time. I'm hoping you fashion-savvy folks can help me chose one lucky dress. Candidate number 1 is the flirty and fun Hepcat in Cherry:
This dress ticks all of my frock love requirements: amazing colour, fun pattern, great details, and vintage-inspired style. It's no secret I adore polka dots and I'm sure you all can guess that this lovely frock had me at hello! The full skirt, pretty covered buttons, cap sleeves, and contrast sash also had me swooning.
Candidate number two is the About the Artist Dress in Coral. Whilst chatting with Tracey, I was lamenting that the super cute Coach Tour Dresses are about 2" too short for me to wear in any level of comfort - I won't wear anything above my knee and constantly pull at anything that does. Tracey said I would love the About the Artist Dresses and she was absolutely right. Aren't they pretty?
Again, the frock love boxes are all ticked. Did you see the adorable heart shaped buttons and the contrast piping?! I'm swooning again! They even piped the waist tie! It's that kind of attention to detail that really catches my eye.

So, given my $50 budget and only one dress can be the winner, which one do you think I should chose and why? I'm eagerly awaiting your feedback!

There is no doubt in my mind: dress 1 all the way!
So, reasons. I much prefer the simpler, straighter lines in dress 1, and the bolder colour. The details in dress 2 are a bit too sweet for my taste, and the colour is not quite as nice.
Generally if I buy ready to wear, I limit my self to something I can't make, something I don't want to put the effort into making, or something with a phenomenal fabric I'll never be a be able to find. I'd say that the polka dot dress would be the easier of the two to replicate so there's a vote for the coral dress. (I've had a bear of a time trying to find coral fabric for a project I've been dreaming about for a long time.)
But then again, the polka dots are so you!
Both have the same shape so it's the fabric and details.. Those heart buttons won for me...
El vestido de los topos, porque es eterno, siempre lo podrás poner y me parece más favorecedor, pero me gustan los dos vestidos.

The dress of the dots, because it is eternal, always and I think you can put more flattering, but I like both dresses.

I'd say the coral dress, although I love the polka dots. The first one would be easier for you to recreate if you really want both :)
Oh, hepcat in cherry for sure. Dress it up or down and wear it anywhere. The other one is a bit cutesy for some places?
Ooh! I love the "About the Artist" dress-- it feels a little more special with the extra details of piping, buttons, and ruffles!
I really like all of the details on the second one! And I agree with you about the coach tour dress...I own the one in purple and the only way I feel comfortablein it is with super opaque tights. I'm tempted to shorten it into a tunic so I can just wear it with pants.
Now I know why you've been pinning up a storm of ModCloth dresses! Both adorable, but come on: Heart buttons? It's a clear winner. :)
Ooo, they're both very cute! My first though was the coral one because of the cute, extra details. But, after reading through some the reviews, it seems the shoulders and armcyes can a bit of a problem. The polka dot dress has great feedback and it's apparently the same as the Soda Fountain dress so, you'd already know what size to buy and how it would fit. I vote polka dots - they're classic and charming :-)
Now, to resist the temptation of ordering one myself!
Hi Sarah!
Both dresses are adorable but my vote goes to dress #1. I really love the red/white contrast & the princess seaming.

I know exactly what you mean about ModCloth - I confess that I own the Soda Fountain dress in 3 colors (cola, cherry and grape). As I understand it, the fit is very similar to the Hepcat dress. If you want to wear it and feel comfortable as you do in the Soda Fountain dress, I'd go with that one - simply because according to the reviews the fit seems to be pretty consistent. Shopping online is always so hit or miss - there's always the risk that something won't fit. I covet the red Hepcat dress, too, though so I'm biased. :)
Both are lovely - but I would choose the one with a little more length.
I'd go for dress #1. I love the darker red and princess seams are super flattering. Then I'd make the other dress ;)
oh my goodness that soda fountain dress is gorgeous! I need to find a pattern that has cap sleeves like that. LOVE. But as for your store credit... tough choice. I'm leaning more towards that sherbert peach number. It's the belt that sold me - I love that cream outline!!! I'm sure whichever you choose will be lovely though :)
I love the Hepcat in Cherry. Love polka dots, and the simplicity of the design.
I own the "about the artist" dress in navy and feel like it was a good buy. It's flattering, fits well and people love those details. I'm on the fence about the heart buttons. But, since it's an inexpensive dress, corners were cut. It really needs a lining and the contrast piping is really just serged edges in white thread.
I can see why you like both of them. I agree with the others that #1 would be easier to duplicate than #2, so that's what I'd buy.
You must model your choice when you get it!
Spotty frocks all the way
Go with the grape dress.
Go with the coral dress. I love the little heart buttons.
i love both dresses but i vote for the coral one. love those buttons!
Coral dress: more unusual color, fab details, longer length, and harder to recreate than the red polka dotted one.
the purple dress is amazing! I'd love to have one like that :D I'd go for the first dress, it's so beautiful!
