52 Dresses Project: Fortune Favors the Brae Hacker

Source: modcloth.com via Sarah on Pinterest

ModCloth recently had a 70% off sale where I was able to snap up several dresses for a song.  The Fortune Favors the Brae dress (above) was one of them.  I fell in love with the pretty rose print, pleated midriff band, and piped bodice.   It is fully lined and when it arrived, it fit like a dream! However, the hem was just a little shorter than I'm comfortable with and the bodice needed a bit of an....um....concealer.

Firstly, I unpicked the hem and sewed on a 3" cream eyelet border.  This lengthened it beautifully and I love the look of eyelet. I think it goes well with the vaguely 80's rose print fabric.

Secondly, I added a small piece of the same eyelet to the bodice to make me feel more comfortable and have the dress be work appropriate!

Last of all, I converted the dress from a halter to standard shoulder straps.  It was quite easy to do, as the straps were already quite long.  Mr. G pinned them for me and I sewed away.  It was even easier to convert as the dress has a shirred back - no zipper to contend with!

I wore it to work with a vintage beaded cardigan over top and my pink flats - so comfortable!  I love, love, love my modified dress and for less than $15 (regularly over $50), my wallet loves it, too!

Nice reworking of it! Modcloth does have some cute stuff, but I very rarely buy from them since their dresses tend to run so short...not very professional, even in an artsy way, IMO. I think your hack is way cuter than the original!

Great way to alter it to make it work better for you! I love the solution with the lace.

Very nice! You saved the dress from being too revealing and it totally blends with the look of the dress :)
